In 2024, the African Palliative Care Association, in partnership with True Colours, launched a photography competition to highlight the power of visual storytelling in showcasing what good African palliative care looks like.

The competition attracted 60 submissions from 10 countries across Africa. Entries were reviewed by an independent expert panel which shortlisted 13 entries. The panel then went on to select five winning photographs.

The winning photographs are:

1st Place

Alex and Bernadette, Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa – Hospice Africa Uganda

2nd Place

Mbongue Grace Elise, Volunteers For Palliative Care (VOPACA) Cameroon

3rd Place

Francisca Nagujja, Mobile Hospice Mbarara Uganda

4th Place

Dara Vanden Bosch, Mvura Ya Upenhu Cuidados Paliativos Mozambique

5th Place

Tandiyar Samir Mossaad Ghattas, Josaab Foundation for Social Development/ Hospice Egypt

We were delighted with the wide range of photographs submitted. Together, they demonstrate all facets of palliative care, from pain management, therapeutic and practical support and home visits to family support, spiritual and psychosocial care, education and research.
